We are Krutart. A creative studio founded by three film school graduates who set out to tell stories that matter. Our journey began with live-action filmmaking, but our first real breakthrough came with the feature documentary The Russian Job, which premiered at IDFA, the world’s leading documentary festival, and later aired across the globe – from the US to Japan. This success was our no way back moment – from then on, we were committed to creating stories for a global audience.
The next turning point was Kosmix, our first animated TV series for kids blending science and adventure. Created for Czech Television, it introduced young explorers Kit and Mr. Battery, who ventured through space and the deep sea. Through Kosmix, we honed our unique storytelling method: turning scientific facts into emotional narratives. The series became a hit in both Czechia and abroad (China, Canada, France), and today, we are expanding the Kosmix universe with an animated feature film.
In 2019, while working on audiovisual projects for museums, we stumbled upon fulldome films—a breathtaking, immersive medium. We saw a gap: planetariums lacked high-quality science storytelling for kids and families, the kind we had mastered in Kosmix. So we made a bold decision: we’d be the ones to fill it. This immersive medium had the potential for stunning visuals and engaging narratives—a perfect fit for our expertise. Inspired by this opportunity, we spent months researching the industry, identifying planetarium needs, and designing our debut fulldome film, 3-2-1 Liftoff!.
What followed were three years of relentless struggle. A skyrocketing budget. A pandemic that wiped out our revenue streams. An insane learning curve. By the end, our technical team had spent four sleepless days rendering nonstop, just to meet the premiere deadline. We had never made a 3D CGI film, never worked in fulldome format, and had to navigate these challenges during COVID. The project stretched from one year to three, our budget nearly tripled, and our team expanded from a handful of people to over 50 artists and specialists. In November 2021, the first audiences saw 3-2-1 Liftoff!, though we continued refining it for months.
But the response was clear: there was hunger for quality fulldome content. The film didn’t just succeed. It won nearly every major fulldome festival worldwide, proving that high quality immersive science storytelling for kids had a massive demand. Within just 1 year, the film recouped its investment, proving that our storytelling approach worked in the planetarium world. Today, the film is financing our next productions and laying the foundation for our future.
Instead of relying on traditional film and technology distributors, we made a bold choice: we would distribute our films ourselves. In 2022, we built our in-house distribution team, professionalizing the fulldome content sales process. This shift was a game-changer – allowing us to keep control, provide better service, and directly engage with planetariums worldwide.
If there is one defining trait of Krutart, it is improvisation. We don’t follow conventional paths – we find smarter, better ways to create and distribute our films. Instead of waiting for returns from traditional distributors, we built our own sales network. Instead of making standard educational films, we developed a unique storytelling formula that blends science with deep emotion.
This spirit of innovation drives everything we do. And we’re just getting started.
Our distribution team doesn’t just sell films; they understand the planetarium industry inside out. They travel to the world’s biggest fulldome events, build relationships with directors and content programmers, and gather direct feedback from planetariums. As active members of IPS, we are constantly in touch with the global market, ensuring our films meet the evolving needs of the fulldome community.
